R-32 is one of the two refrigerants replacing R-410A in new residential and light-commercial air conditioners, heat pumps and ductless mini-splits. If you’re a tech or contractor installing or servicing R-32 equipment, this guide covers what R-32 is, what changes on the job because it’s an A2L, how it compares with R-454B and R-410A, and how to buy it by the pallet.
Quick answer: R-32 (HFC-32, difluoromethane) is a single-component refrigerant with a GWP of about 675, roughly two-thirds lower than R-410A. It’s classed A2L (lower toxicity, mildly flammable) and has zero ozone depletion potential. It is not a drop-in for R-410A or R-22 systems. Use it only in equipment designed and rated for R-32. Absolute Refrigerants sells virgin, factory-sealed R-32 in 20 lb cylinders by the quarter, half or full pallet, with free pallet freight. Bulk pricing drops as you buy more. What R-32 is
- Chemistry: pure difluoromethane (CH2F2), also sold as HFC-32. It is not a blend.
- GWP: about 675, versus about 2,088 for R-410A.
- Safety class: A2L under ASHRAE 34.
- Ozone depletion potential: zero.
- Pressures: slightly higher than R-410A, with higher discharge temperatures, which is one reason the equipment has to be designed for it.
- Charge size: R-32 systems typically need a smaller charge than the same-size R-410A system. Always charge to the nameplate.
Why R-32 is showing up in new equipment
Under the AIM Act, EPA’s Technology Transitions rule limits new residential and light-commercial AC and heat pump systems to refrigerants under 700 GWP. R-32 (about 675) and R-454B (about 466) both qualify, so manufacturers moved new equipment to one or the other starting in 2025. R-32 has been used in ductless and mini-split systems around the world for years, and several U.S. brands now use it in ducted systems too.
R-410A is being phased down, not banned for service. Existing R-410A systems can still be repaired and recharged with R-410A. Buying for an R-410A unit? See our R-410A buying guide.
What changes on the job with an A2L
A2L means mildly flammable. It’s hard to ignite and burns slowly, but handling it is not the same as handling R-410A. Follow the equipment manufacturer’s instructions and current codes. The basics most techs run into:
- Cylinders look different. A2L cylinders carry a red band or marking and use a left-hand-thread valve connection, so you’ll need A2L-compatible hoses or adapters.
- Tools must be rated for A2L. Recovery machines, vacuum pumps and leak detectors should be listed for A2L refrigerants.
- No fractionation. Because R-32 is a single component, it doesn’t separate the way a blend can. Still follow the manufacturer’s charging procedure.
- Ventilation and no ignition sources near the work area while the system is open.
- Recover, don’t vent. Venting is prohibited, the same as with HFCs.
- Never mix refrigerants or top off an R-410A system with R-32.
R-32 vs R-454B vs R-410A
| R-32 | R-454B | R-410A | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Type | Single component | Blend (R-32 + R-1234yf) | Blend (R-32 + R-125) |
| GWP (approx.) | 675 | 466 | 2,088 |
| Safety class | A2L | A2L | A1 |
| Pressures vs R-410A | Slightly higher | Slightly lower | Baseline |
| Used in | New equipment built for R-32, many ductless mini-splits | New AC and heat pumps built for R-454B | Existing R-410A systems |
| Drop-in for each other? | No | No | No |
The nameplate decides. If it says R-32, buy R-32. If it says R-454B, buy R-454B. If it says R-410A, the system still takes R-410A. R-32 is also an ingredient in both R-410A (half R-32) and R-454B (mostly R-32), but the pure refrigerant and those blends are different products. R-32 FAQ
Is R-32 a replacement for R-410A?
Only in new equipment. R-32 is one of the two main refrigerants replacing R-410A in new air conditioners and heat pumps, along with R-454B. It is not a drop-in for an existing R-410A system.
Can I mix R-32 with R-410A or top off an R-410A system with R-32?
No. Never mix refrigerants. An R-410A system still takes R-410A, and an R-32 system takes R-32. Go by the nameplate.
Is R-32 flammable?
R-32 is classed A2L, meaning lower toxicity and mildly flammable. Use A2L-rated tools and follow the equipment manufacturer's instructions and local codes.
What is the difference between R-32 and R-454B?
R-32 is a single-component refrigerant with a GWP of about 675. R-454B is a blend of R-32 and R-1234yf with a GWP of about 466. Both are A2L, and they are not interchangeable.
Do I need an EPA card to buy R-32?
At checkout you can upload your EPA card or e-sign a waiver confirming the refrigerant goes to a certified HVAC technician.
How does R-32 ship?
R-32 is sold by the pallet in 20 lb cylinders. Pallets ship by truck freight at no charge to the lower 48, with a signature required on delivery. Weekday orders placed before 1 PM MST usually ship the same day.
